Ranks

Hamish, the 501st Fengo.
Fengos are the wolves of the Watch that have the highest-rank in the entire social structure of the wolves of the Beyond.

  Description

Fengos are the highest-ranking wolves in the Watch and the Beyond. They are malcadhs.

History

The first Fengo's name was Fengo. Fengo led the wolves to the Beyond during the time of the Long Cold. Once they all settled there, Fengo taught Grank how to become a collier and established the Watch when Hoole told him to protect it. The rank "Fengo" was named after Fengo himself.

The Watch

The Fengo is the highest-ranking wolf currently serving at the Watch. The Fengos are wise and have the title of the "Supreme Sayer" and can call things crait, the wolf word for forbidden or gulity. The Fengo holds gaddergnaws, tells gnaw wolves where to go on their Slaan Leat, and mostly guards the the Ember of Hoole from graymalkins

The first Fengo.

A Chieftain is the leader of a wolf clan. In the clan, they have the highest rank, they'd only submit to other wolves when either they were coming into other clan's territory or when they encounter the Fengo, the highest ranking wolf of the Beyond. Fengos are the 'chieftains' of the Sacred Watch.

History

It is unknown how the wolves started the Great Chain, (which is most likely when the wolves created chieftains) which names all the ranks starting from Lupus as the highest and the soil as the lowest. All that is known is that the wolves already had their social structure and clan seperation when they moved to the Beyond in the time of the Long Cold.

The Great Chain

Chieftains are fifth in the order of the Great Chain, with ceilidh fyre (lightning) above them and Lords below them. The Great Chain is the wolves of the Beyond's social structure.

Namaras are the only female chieftains.

A lord is what a pack leader or higher-ranking wolf of a pack of the wolves of the Beyond is called. They are the highest-ranking wolves in a pack. Chieftains are the lords of the Carreg Gaer packs. Lords are the highest rank wolves in the pack. In real life, lords can be compared to the alpha of a pack.

History

The history of lords is unknown, but they probably started out after Fengo led the wolves to the Beyond and the clans were all created. Higher-ranking wolves, big and strong, were probably selected as an responsible leader, or some of the most domiant, strongest fought to get this rank. Lords are mentioned and seen only in the beginning of Shadow Wolf.

Practices and Traditions

Not much is known about Lords. It is unknown how they are chosen. There are many possible ways. The strong and most responsible wolves would probably fight, or the Lord's assistant (if they have one) could take over when the leader retires or passes on. Also, their pups could become the new leaders. It is unknown if they are even allowed to mate, as being a parent may distract them from their work.
Another thing that remains unknown, is the genders. Either only males can lead or there could both a dragga and drappa (Alpha male and female), or it can be a single, any-gender wolf.

Known Lords

  • Lord Claren of the River Pack of the MacDuncan clan
  • Lord Bhreac of the Pack of the Eastern Scree of the MacDuncan clan
  • Lord Jarne of the MacDuncan clan
  • Lord Dain of the Pack of the Singing Grass of the MacDuncan clan
  • Lord Adair of the MacDuncan clan

A gnaw wolf is the lowest-ranking member in a wolf pack and clan. They are malcadhs, or also known as cursed wolves, who have survived after being abandoned by the Obea on a tummfraw and somehow made it back to their clan. They are then given a name and put in a pack.
They must sleep off pack boundaries, eat last though usually the meat will all have been taken already, and endure endless abuse. They are subject to regular bites, kicks, punishments, and verbal abuse. Most of the abuse they recieve is unjustified, and are given to them for no significant reason, except for the fact that they are considered "cursed ones".
Many malcadhs that return to their clans turn out to be extremely talented wolves.

Description

Gnaw wolves are malcadhs who somehow survived their tummfraw and made it back to the clan. Again, they are malcadhs, meaning they have been born with a deformity. They are also scratched and bruised from the abuse from other wolves in their pack and clan, with both words and nips, they suffer. Gnaw wolves are the lowest-ranking wolves in the entire clan, although they are important as they write

Gnaw wolves sometimes get the Gnaw Bite.

down important events in the pack.

Treatment

Gnaw wolves are subject to regular bites, kicks, punishments and verbal abuse, but the worst of these is the gnaw bite. Their deformities mark of a living symbol of bad blood, and somehow the clan rids itself of the bad blood through the mistreatment of gnaw wolves. They are lowest-ranking wolves in the pack.
When approached by higher wolves, like the pack leader, they are required to:
  • Go down to their knees.
  • Lower their heads.
  • Lay back their ears.
  • Grind their face in the dirt.
  • Roll over onto their back.
  • Flash the whites of their eyes.
  • Tuck their tails between their legs at all times.
  • Slouch.
  • Never show dominance to any other wolf.
  • Be respectful of the other pack members
    Gnaw wolves gnaw on bones.

    .
The pack gives them bones on which they gnaw important events that take place in the pack or simply just to practice their gnawing skills.
Despite their low rank, they are usually still valued in their packs, mostly due to the fact that they are the ones to keep records of the important events that occur in a pack.

Practices and Traditions

Gnaw wolves must sleep off pack boundries, eat last, and endure endless abuse. They are subject to regular bites, kicks, punishments, and verbal abuse.
Every fifteen years or so, a gaddergnaw happens. This is a competion to choose the best gnaw wolf to join the Sacred Watch. Gaddergnaw activites include the gnaw wolves gnawing their own story bone, hunting and taking part in a byrrgis, and much more. In the end, one, rarely two, join the Watch. If two gnaw wolves are choosen, they are never from the same clan. But first, after winning, they must find their tummfraws on their Slaan Leat, or journey

towards truth. During hunts, not including the byrrgis in the gaddergnaw, gnaw wolves have the task of searching for the prey's urine or scat instead of joining in the byrrgis. This rank is called a sweeper. They are not allowed to join in the howling, known as gaddergludders, or in the kill rush and they must eat after the rest of their pack

Obeas are the barren she-wolves who are

It is an Obea's responsibility to take sick or deformed wolf pups to their death.

responsible for seeking malcadhs and taking them to tummfraws. They are all barren and in fact appointed because of that. Obeas are rankless, however and each wolf clan has one. If the deformed and sick pups that they have abandoned survive, they can come back to the clan and become a gnaw wolf.

Description

Obeas are the old, barren, rankless, and stertile she-wolves. They are frowned upon and gossiped about by pregnant or nursing she-wolves, believing that the Obea can look into their womb and curse a pup. Father wolves seem to look right through them and not care.

History

Before the Books

Obeas are an important part of the wolves' laws, as they perform the task of taking and abandoning

 malcadh pups.

Lone WolfEdit

In Lone Wolf, the Obea of the MacDuncan clan is a tawny she-wolf named Shibaan. But Shibaan was no ordinary wolf or Obea. She was able to track down any by-lang she-wolf.
Morag, a silver she-wolf, went by-lang on her third litter of pups. Despite her tricks, such as urinating only in ice-free parts of the river, Shibaan is able to track her down. She takes the silver pup, who has a splayed paw, to an icy river bank. However, the pup is rescued by a grieving she-bear and

named Faolan. Later, Shibaan is seen taking a pup with a half hind paw to its tummfraw. Aftershocks from a previous earthquake kill her, and she imagines herself running to rescue the pup.

Shadow Wolf

After Shibaan passes away, Lael is chosen as the new MacDuncan Obea. On his journey back to the Carreg Gaer, Faolan sees her carrying a tawny she-pup to a moose trail.

Watch Wolf

The MacHeath Obea was Airmead.
At the Carreg Gaer of the MacHeath clan, Airmead, along with many of the other of the pack wolves, appears watching how Edme talks to Dunbar about ripping out her eye. When she says "I was born a poor malcadh, was I not?", she turns to the MacHeath Obea, which no one seems to notice. Soon Airmead comes up to Dunbar and Edme, but Dunbar snarls and pushes her to the ground. Edme then says "No need to abuse the Obea" then headbutts Dunbar, saying,"Who was it who tore out my eye? You, Dunbar?"

Airmead was the MacHeath obea.

Later in the chapter "The Obea Speaks", Airmead finds Edme and tells her to follow her, so they can dig a snow pit. She tells Edme about what happens to wolves who try to leave for the MacNamara clan, how Dunbar MacHeath killed her mother and her own plans to leave for the clan east of the HacHeaths.
In the chapter "Escape of the She-Wolves", Katria, a she-wolf from the Carreg Gaer of the MacHeath clan, is leaving for the MacNamaras. She finds Airmead, who says she knew about her leaving. When Katria asks how, Airmead said she was watching her, and that she herself was leaving for the Namaras. She says she was afraid to go by herself and tells Katria to cover her tracks, as she has done.
While traveling, Katria and Airmead meet Brangwen and Morag. They later appear at the war and stop Dunbar's slink melf from killing Grizz.
