"I have no choice but to die... NO! I have jumped for a tree,
jumped for a raven, jumped for a cougar. I shall jump for the sun!"
-Faolan when he jumps over the wall of fire; Lone Wolf, page 211
Faolan MacDuncan is a young male dire wolf (Canis Dirus) and the main protagonist of the Wolves of the Beyond series, as the books follow his life. He is the son of Morag and Kinnaird. Faolan was born as an outcast because of his splayed paw and left on ice to drown, but was rescued by Thunderheart. He soon joins the MacDuncan pack of the Eastern Scree and becomes a gnaw wolf, later becoming part of the Watch. He is the one who "jumped for the sun".
Faolan is currently the leader of the survivors who are traveling to the Distant Blue, including Edme, Banja, Maudie, Myrrglosch, Mhairie, Dearlea, the Whistler, Caila, Abban, Katria, Airmead, Toby, Burney and Gwynneth.
One of his front paws is splayed, meaning that the toes are further apart from each other. However, when the Great Mending comes in Spirit Wolf, his paw is straightned. He has a spiral mark shaped like a swirled star on the pad of his left paw, making him a malcadh. Although the meaning of this spiral is unknown, Faolan believes it is part of a bigger destiny or a great harmony.

He has a black nose and a bit of white fur above his eye. He has shiny, golden fangs. Faolan is very fast; faster than the she-wolves, who are said to be the faster than males. One of his front paws is splayed, meaning that the toes are further apart from each other. Splayed Paw "I seek death, and it seeks life!" -Thunderheart when she first sees Faolan, Lone Wolf, page 19 Thunderheart (first known as "The Milk Giver" or sometimes known as "The Second Milk Giver" by Faolan) was a female grizzly bear who rescued and raised Faolan after her last-born was taken and killed by cougars. To Faolan, she became known as Thunderheart because of her large, booming heart. She died in an earthquake while looking for Faolan. While she does not appear, Thunderheart is constantly mentioned by her adopted son, Faolan.
DescriptionEditThunderheart was a massive female grizzly bear, with silvery tips on her cocoa brown fur. Like other grizzlies, she had a large hump on her back, where her step son, Faolan, would often climb aboard. She also had rich, gleaming, cocoa brown eyes, so shiny you could see your reflection in them, and on bright days they were described as being "tawny gold.""One paw splayed! Not two, not three. Not...not eighteen!" -The Sark to the chieftains; Lone Wolf. The Sark of the Slough MacNab (also know n as just "the Sark") was a lone dire she-wolf said to have sarkish powers. Sark is the Old Wolf word for witch. She lived in a cave with a fire pit, pelts, potions, memory jugs, and herbs. The Sark lived in the marshy Slough part of the Beyond. Many she-wolves come to her to start the forgetting, a period in which they try to forget about giving birth to a malcadh, so that the she-wolf can move on to a new clan, a new pack, a new mate, and have healthy pups. The Sark was born to the MacNab clan, yet was either abandoned by her mother or purposly left behind.
DescriptionEditThe Sark wasn't very pretty. In fact, she was blighted by one eye that seems to skitter to the side. And her fur was wild, as if not just her hackles, but her entire pelt, was in a constant state of alarm. If one could look closely at her eyes, if one eye was not so skittish, one could see that her eyes were not the same color. One was the true green of the wolves of the Beyond, while the other was amber, like an owl's. If she had these effects at birth, the Sark would have been claimed a malcadh. Her fur color is still unknown.Gwynneth (pronunced Gwen-neth) is a Rogue Smith Masked Owl who resides in Beyond the Beyond and is the daughter of the highly regarded Rogue Smith Gwyndor.
DescriptionEditGwynneth is a Masked Owl, a species of owl from Tyto. It is unknown what type of Masked Owl she is.FamilyEditGwyndor- FatherThora Plonk- "Auntie" Gwynneth- Mother HistoryEditBefore the BooksEditGwynneth was born to Gwyndor and his unknown mate who had died before she was hatched (Gwynneth was named after her mother, so we assume her mother was named Gwynneth). As she grew, she expressed interest in smithing. As a result, Gwyndor introduced her to Thora Plonk, the Rogue Smith of Silverveil, who taught her much of what she knew about the fine craft of smithing. She came to respect Thora and affectionately called her "Auntie" and would stay with her for long periods of time. However, Gwyndor still made time for his daughter and took her to the Beyond when he believed that she was getting too artsy. While in the Beyond, she learned much about the dire wolves from her father and could easily identify the messages of every skreeleen (all stated in the Guardians of Ga'Hoole). Lone WolfEditAfter the War of the Ember, Gwynneth established her forge in the Beyond and became a rogue smith. It was also during this time that her father died because of wounds he suffered during the war.One day while trying to create metal art, she overheard a beautiful howling sound and decided to find the source. This was how Gwynneth came across Faolan, a lone dire wolf with a splayed paw mourning for the loss of his second milk-giver, Thunderheart. She felt a great deal of kinship with Faolan because of the similarities in the circumstances of their family. It was by this kinship that she was able to convince Faolan to seek out the wolves of the Beyond and become a gnaw wolf instead of staying with her. Gwynneth also made Faolan promise not to come and visit her until he had become a gnaw wolf. After he left, Gwynneth unintentionally shaped a piece of metal into the swirling shape she had seen on Faolan's twisted paw. Interested as to whether Faolan had taken her advice, Gwynneth followed the young wolf's trail. She eventually witnessed Faolan being hunted by the various Wolf Clans of the Beyond because they suspected that he was infected with the foaming mouth disease. When she attempted to intervene, she nearly went yeep at the sight of Faolan jumping over the wall of flame erected by the pursuing wolves in an attempt to eliminate the potential threat. Despite going yeep, she managed to recover from the shock and greeted Faolan on the other side of the wall of flame. Shadow WolfEditGwynneth is the witness of the murder of an unnamed tawny malcadh pup, altough she only heard it. She tells the Sark of the Slough what she heard. In the end, the rouge smith helps Faolan, along with the Sark, give evidence that the murderer is Heep.Later after Heep escapes punishment and Faolan is named one of the two winning gnaw wolves who gets to become a new watch member, Gwynneth is the first to witness Heep and two outclanner wolves looking for Faolan's most cherished bones of Thunderheart and alerts Faolan. Before he gets there, Gwynneth is the first to confront Heep, attacking him with her talons until Faolan arrives. Watch WolfEditGwynneth is one of the many owls who fly to the Ring of Sacred Volcanoes during the She-Winds. She also goes with Faolan and the Sark to the MacNamara Clan so Faolan can meet Morag, his first mother. She is also in the epilouge with the Sark when Faolan begins to howl after he sees both Morag and Thunderheart climbing to the Cave of Souls.Frost WolfEditIn Frost Wolf Gwynneth continues the journey of finding her father's resting place that she long forgot. She and the Sark of the Slough not only find the resting place of Gwyndor but, find and reveal the Prophet to be none other than Liam MacDuncan. |
