"I have no choice but to die... NO! I have jumped for a tree, jumped for a raven, jumped for a cougar. I shall jump for the sun!"
~Faolan in Lone Wolf, part 3
"Beyond the next Beyond!" -The first Fengo Beyond the Beyond is an area of harsh wilderness beyond the Owl Kingdoms, and is the main setting in theWolves of the Beyond series.
It is the adopted home of the wolves, where their original homeland is
known as the Always Cold. Some historic events in Hoolian history have
occured here.
The Beyond is land of harsh wilderness of short summers and violent
winters. There is not one willow leaf, nor willow tree. There is a long
river that splits the region in two.
The Beyond is located just South of the Owl Kingdoms and the Sea of
Vastness, and is West to the Hoolian Kingdoms. The Middle Kingdoms are
North-East of the Beyond.

"Does the wall breathe or is it merely rock? Do I dream or do I wake?" -Faolan when he steps into the Cave Before Time; Lone Wolf, page 113 The Cave Before Time is a cave with many paintings, with the painting of the Great Wolf constellation on the ceiling, that Faolan finds "visiting" the Outermost looking for Thunderheart. The paintings show the times of the Long Cold, Fengo leading the wolves to the Beyond, and the odd spiral marking on Faolan's paw.
Spoiler warning!
This article contains plot details from one or more of the books.
In Lone Wolf, after returning to the Beyond from the Outermost, Faolan discovers the Cave Before Time. He was extremely interested in all of it. Faolan eventually left the cave and returned to his time.
The Ring of Sacred Volcanoes (often called "The Ring " for short) is an area in the north-eastern part of the Beyond. It is chain made of five volcanoes, in which the the Ember of Hoole travels around. This is also where the dire wolves of the Sacred Watch live, guarding the ember from graymalkins, owls who wish to use the ember for evil purposes.
The Ring has a chain of five volcanoes, Dunmore, Morgan, Stormfast, Kiel, and H'rathghar, and as shown on the cover of Watch Wolf, the volcanoes are brownish-orangish rocky mountains with lava coming from the top.
The Ring is located in the north-eastern part of the Beyond. It is
almost in the middle-east. North-West of the Ring is the long river that
spilts the Beyond in two, which runs going down and the Crooked Back Ridge. North is the Black Glass Desert and MacDuncan territory and the long river. North-east is MacNamara territory and The Broken Talon Point.
South-west of the Ring is Gwynneth's forge, the Two Salt Lakes and the MacDuff territory. It is west of the place where Thunderheart found Faolan. South of them is the MacNab Territory and the Shadow Forest.
One of the five volcanoes of the Ring. It is highly possible it was named after Dunmore, the second Fengo of the Watch. It, along with Morgan, has a 'wolfish' sounding name.
H'rathghar is one of the five volcanoes. 'H'rath' is prononced with a
growl at the back of the throat. The name of this volcano is an owlish
name from the Northern Kingdoms.
Kiel is another one of the five volcanoes. It is 'the most boring
watch'. It's a shield volcano, whose long, gently slopping lava flows
yields the fewest retrievable coals, and therefore is the least visited
by colliering owls. Kiel's name is an owlish name from the Northern
Kingdoms.
Stormfast is the last of the five Sacred Volcanoes. In Watch Wolf, Edme jokes saying, "I've never met a wolf named Stormfast".
The Sacred Watch (also known as just "The Watch") is the most elite group of wolves, which are all from different clans and each being in the past a gnaw wolf, who protect the Ember of Hoole from graymalkins.
In order to become part of the Sacred Watch, a gnaw wolf must win a gaddergnaw. Wolves who are part of the Sacred Watch are called Wolves of the Watch, or Watch Wolves.
The Watch wolves live in a close relationship with the owls of
Ga'Hoole. The connection goes back to the beginnings of the wolves' time
in the Beyond. When the good king Hoole first discovered the ember, he made a pact with the wolves that they guard it until an appointed king appears to get it.
The Watch wolves lives around the five Sacred Volcanoes, in which the Ember of Hoole travels around in.
There are cairns, high towers of bones where the wolves are required to do Scanning Jumps. There is another cairn, shorter than the rest, made up of all the Fengo's bones.
Watch wolves each have their own dens, with thick, winter caribou pelts.
The Watch is located at the Ring of Sacred Volcanoes, where they guard the [[Ember of Hoole|Ember of Hoole]]. The Ring is located near the northeasten Beyond.
Every fifteen years or so, a gaddergnaw is held to chose a gnaw wolf, the best gnaw wolf, to join the Watch. In the gaddergnaw, the competing gnaw wolves are required to gnaw bones and compete in a byrrgis.
They are also spared from being nipped and kicked at, and are shown
respect from other wolves. They also get to sleep in a deep, cozy den
together.
After winning, the winning gnaw wolf, or wolves, are then required to go on a Slaan Leat, a journey towards truth. Before joining the Watch, he or she must find their tummfraw.
Watch wolves also guard the Ember of 'Hoole from graymalkins, the bad owls who try to steal the valuable ember, which travels through all the lava flows in the Watch. The Ember
is a mysterious ember said to be imbued with powerful magen. It has
been the subject of past and contemporary contention in the owl kingdoms
because of this fact. It was retrieved by Hoole, the first ruler of the
Great Ga'Hoole Tree.
Watch wolves perform scanning jumps on cairns to scan the sky for any graymalkins. Then sound the alarm if see a suspicious owl.
Watch wolves also decide terrtorial boundries, settle clan disputes and are the Supreme Raignaid,
the final court for amending and creating new laws. They are the most
powerful force in the Beyond. But, then again, their most important of
all task is to guard the Ember.
The Fengo is the one wolf of the Watch who seems to control it. They
are the highest-ranking wolves of the Watch and other Watch Wolves obey
the Fengo's orders. Male wolves may be the ones chosen to be Fengos,
since there is no known she-wolf Fengo. This rank is named after Fengo, the first Fengo and the special wolf who led the wolves to the Beyond. The last Fengo was Finbar.
Although not much is known about Wind-Scouts, they probably are the
wolves who report on wind and weather. They seem to know everything
about the She-Winds, and can go as far south as Shadow Forest
to find out what is up with the winds. The only known Wind-Scout is
Padreigh, or Paddy, but it is very likely there were a few more.
Taiga is the wolf word for teacher, and they are the Watch Wolves who teach new Watch wolves about Scanning Leaps, graymalkins, and the Volcanoes. Known taigas are Twist, Winks, and Malachy.
Although the correct name for this rank is not known, they teach new
Watch wolves about different owls and their chararistics and
descriptions and about graymalkins in a den. The latest "Owl-Tutor" is a wolf named Malachy.
The Blood Watch is a group of wolves who live by the border of
the Outermost whose job is to keep outclanners out of the Beyond. If any
outclanners dare to cross the border, they are immediatly killed or
chased out.
Within the clans of the Beyond, certain wolves were selected very young to train for Blood Watch.
The wolves of the Blood Watch hold the important duty of protecting
the Beyond by keeping the savage outclanners out of the Beyond and in
the Outermost. They are the Beyond's "border patrol".
There are about thirty cairns, each topped with a wolf looking over the border of the Beyond and the Outermost. If an outclanner was caught slipping the Beyond-Outermost border, then the blooders would immediedly kill them or chase them out back to the Outermost.
The Dim World is what the wolves of the Beyond think of as ****. This is possibly the place where vyrrwolves come from. The Dim World and Hagsmire may be the same thing, beacuse all ****s supposedly are one. Hagsfiends from Hagsmire are like the vyrrwolves of the Dim World. There is also a heaven, called the Cave of Souls.
The Cave of Souls is the place where wolves go to after they
have died. They will only go if they have a good soul. Other animals can
come, because there are no borders in skies, thus linking different
animal heavens together.
The Cave of Souls is what the dire wolves think of as their heaven.
It is described as being in the stars, and having a ladder that must be
climbed to get there. There's a spirit to help them up, such as Skaarsgard. There is also a ****ish equivalent called the Dim World.
I think they should make a 7th book of Wolves of the Beyond.
