The wolves are Dire Wolves! I read the first-ever hints of the books in the book Lost Tales of Ga'Hoole. In chapter 3, the owl writing it says she got the story from some Dire Wolves in the Watch! Also on the cover of that book, well, a picture's worth a thousand words.
